Now that we’re knee-deep into summer, there’s no disproving the fact that it’s hot out! We might still have several more weeks of hot and humid to contend with, but we don’t have to grin and bear it. Instead, escape the heat and submerge yourself in the arts.
While it’s true that we’ve made a name for ourselves with our beaches and Carribean-inspired lifestyle, Ft. Lauderdale is a cultural metropolis with several nationally recognized museums that offer education, admiration, and inspiration.
The NSU Art Museum on Las Olas, for example, is a premier destination for exhibitions and programs offering a kaleidoscope of visual pleasures. Founded in 1958 and housed inside an amazing Edward Larrabee Barnes-designed architectural masterpiece, this museum boasts sought-after temporary exhibits, and a permanent collection of over 6,000 works. I may be biased, as I’m on the museum’s Board of Governors, but art enthusiast or not, visitors are awed by its magnificent exhibitions.
Of course if you feel like starting your own art collection after your visit, that’s perfectly understandable. Nothing boosts personal creativity more than art. Here are a few tips to get you started …
Have a plan… The immense amount of art on the market is both a blessing and a curse for collectors. Whether you’re starting your search online, in a gallery, or at an art fair, it can get overwhelming. Squash those emotions by deciding on an art medium, price point, and the dimensions of the space you’re hoping to fill ahead of time.
Decide on a budget … Art can be found at any price point. Having said that, make sure you do your research before making any purchase to understand why something costs what it does.
Do your homework … The best way to learn about art collecting is to understand it. Go to gallery openings, art fairs, and places where you have the opportunity to meet artists. The more exposure you have to different styles and artists, the easier it will be to zero in on your personal preferences.
Take the plunge … To steal a line from Nike: “Just do it!” Don’t be afraid to trust yourself. Once you come to understand the type of art that inspires you and find a piece you love, buy it!
Be sure you have the right space to display your personally curated art collection. Many Ft. Lauderdale waterfront homes now have areas with just the right light and ambiance to enjoy your special art pieces. Let me help you find your collector’s dream home.
